Pioneering the Future of Edge AI: Deakin University’s New ARC-Backed Project with AIBUILD
In a digital world increasingly reliant on real-time data and intelligent systems, the need for fast, secure, and scalable machine learning (ML) solutions at the edge of networks is more critical than ever.
We’re excited to share that a new research project led by Dr Feifei Chen at Deakin University, in partnership with AIBUILD PTY LTD, has secured close to $500K in competitive ARC funding to advance the next generation of collaborative and reliable machine learning (ML) in edge computing environments, especially over 5G/6G networks.
A Vision for Smarter, Safer, and More Connected Systems
With support from the Australian Research Council (ARC), the project will focus on creating cutting-edge frameworks that enable edge-based machine learning to operate collaboratively and reliably under the demands of modern network infrastructure. By leveraging the capabilities of 5G and upcoming 6G technologies, the research aims to deliver intelligent systems that meet the high standards of real-time responsiveness, data privacy, and operational security, critical for applications like smart cities, autonomous transport, online education, and digital healthcare.
What the Project Aims to Achieve
The research team will tackle key challenges that currently limit the wide-scale adoption of AI at the edge:
- Scalability and security in mobile edge computing
- Performance and privacy guarantees in real-world AI deployments
- Robustness and reliability of ML models in distributed, heterogeneous networks
By solving these challenges, the project hopes to build the technological backbone for:
- Smarter cities with real-time data intelligence
- Resilient education and healthcare systems in a post-COVID era
- Global leadership for Australia in next-generation AI and telecom integration
Academia Meets Industry: AIBUILD’s Role
As the industry partner, AIBUILD PTY LTD brings a wealth of experience in deploying AI solutions across industrial and urban environments. The collaboration will ensure the research outcomes are not only theoretical but also practically viable and industry-ready.
Why It Matters
The convergence of AI and edge computing is set to transform how we live, work, and connect. By fostering innovation at this intersection, Dr Chen and her team are contributing to a future where real-time intelligence becomes an everyday reality, while ensuring it is built on principles of reliability, privacy, and trust.
This project is not just a research milestone; it’s a bold step toward reshaping the digital infrastructure of tomorrow.
