Nano Banana vs GPT-5: Who Rules the Image Game?
AI is moving at a rapid pace, really fast. Just when you thought the field had settled after OpenAI’s GPT-5 launch, Google dropped Gemini 2.5 Flash Image (aka Nano Banana) at the beginning of this month. And wow… It’s making waves.
We decided to put Nano Banana head-to-head against GPT-5 (and its sibling GPT-4o) in a series of creative and editing challenges.
How to Access
- Nano Banana → Download the app on your phone or head to Gemini/Google AI Studio → Select 2.5 Flash → Tools → “Create Images.”
- GPT-5 / 4o → Available via ChatGPT Plus (web or app).
Round 1: Outfit Swap
Prompt: “Change the outfit of the person in the picture to a black pantsuit!”

This photo was taken at the Advancing Research 2030 event, where AIBUILD CEO Yifei Wang attended the launch of the University of Melbourne’s new research strategy. Advancing Research 2030: Excellence for Impact outlines a bold vision to deliver world-class research, strengthen industry collaborations, and tackle complex global challenges.
The event also introduced the University’s Impact Accelerators, designed to bring together interdisciplinary researchers, industry partners, and communities to co-create solutions to pressing global issues.

- Nano Banana: Nailed it. Outfit swap was seamless, and facial details stayed intact.
- GPT-5: Great outfit work, but messed up the face fidelity.
👉 Winner: Nano Banana
Round 2: Create an Ad Banner
Prompt: “Generate an image of a billboard in the middle of Times Square with the following image.”

Output:

- Nano Banana: Captured more city-like environment elements and vibes. The image generated really catches the vibe of Times Square.
- GPT-5: Produced a tighter, more zoomed-in view of the billboard, but lacks the elements of a city.
👉 Winner: Nano Banana
Round 3: Generating a New Image with an Old One
Prompt: “Use the faces from this picture. Show them happy and laughing at a fancy dinner table.”

Output:

- Nano Banana: Delivered natural expressions, creative setting, and strong likeness.
- GPT-5: Stiff and inaccurate faces, lost the magic.
👉 Winner: Nano Banana, hands down.
Round 4: From Logo to Ornament
- Prompt: “Make it into a decorative item that can be placed on the office desk.”

- Nano Banana: Created a futuristic holographic-style ornament. The logo appears projected above a base, glowing with neon accents, eye-catching and stylish, perfect for a modern tech office.
- GPT-5: Delivered a creative twist with a rocket integrated into the logo. The result feels imaginative and bold, giving the ornament a unique identity while maintaining a professional vibe.
2. Prompt: “Make it into a decorative item that can be placed in the company building.”
Input:

Output:

- Nano Banana: Produced a large-scale holographic installation. The AIBUILD logo appears projected in the center of a futuristic office lobby, glowing with neon gradients, which shows striking, innovative, and architectural in scale.
- GPT-5: Generated a sleek neon wall sign. The logo and text glow in vibrant pink and blue tones, creating a modern, creative, and stylish look that feels perfect for an office interior.
👉 No clear winner; both are great, it all comes down to style preference.
Final Thoughts
After running through six tasks, the scorecard looks like this:
- Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5 Flash) → 3 wins + 1 tie
- GPT-5 → 0 wins + 1 tie
Google’s latest model clearly dominates when it comes to image editing, consistency, and creativity. GPT-5 is still powerful in many areas (especially language-heavy tasks), but if your work relies on visual generation and editing, Nano Banana is hard to beat.
This isn’t just hype, it’s a paradigm shift. Agencies, creators, and solo hustlers are already leaning in, using Nano Banana to speed up workflows and push creative boundaries.
At this point, the real question isn’t if AI will transform content creation, it’s whether you’ll be the one leading the wave or scrambling to catch up.
